Rural Tourism in India

What is rural tourism in India?

Rural tourism in India encompasses the reality of true Indian culture. It is one of the most realistic parts of Indian tourism. In recent years, growth in the India rural tourism market has put many Indian villages on the tourist map which has helped in creating awareness of rural living among many people. It not only provides the villagers with a much desired additional source of income, but it is also more beneficial for the visitors as the visitors get the opportunity to interact with the villagers and gain an exceptional perception into the way of rural living. They say the heart of India lies in her villages and experiencing the rural way of living really does prove the statement true.

Ministry of Tourism, Government of India’s objective is to showcase rural life, art, culture, and heritage at rural locations and in villages, which have a core competence in art & craft, handloom, and textiles as also an asset base in the natural environment. The intention is to benefit the local community economically and socially as well as enable interaction between tourists and the local population for a mutually enriching experience.

For the visitor, whose expenditure creates revenue for host community service providers, rural tourism adds value through packaged programs in art & craft imparted by skilled local artisans. The visitor thus comes face to face with India’s rural traditions. Up till the year 2015, 153 rural tourism projects in 28 States/Union Territories have been sanctioned by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, including 36 rural sites where UNDP has supported capacity building.
